The opportunity 

(Please note this is a 12-month contract and hybrid working role.)  

As a subject matter expert on community out-reach and engagement, the incumbent will work cross-functionally with our provincial and national teams, work in collaboration with external partners, advisory groups, volunteers and people with lived experience to successfully develop and deliver engagement initiatives.  

This position will lead provincial planning and execution of community out-reach and engagement for health promotion activities and campaigns. Working with multiple cross-functional teams, the incumbent will ensure that mission efforts in health promotion, policy and systems change align with the national philosophy of keeping the constituent at the centre of everything we do.  

The incumbent will also be responsible for answering public inquiries, onboarding volunteers, and connecting people with lived experience to H&S and external resources.  

The position may be also responsible for the provincial execution of public-facing health promotion efforts in partnership with Marketing/Communications department and stakeholders in Ontario.  

How you will make an impact every day 

Plan and implement provincial health promotion campaigns 

  • Prioritize the development and execution of dissemination strategies to provide FAST signs of stroke messages to target audiences (newcomers and Indigenous communities) through partnerships and community engagement using an EDI lens. 

  • Work with external and internal partners on the creation of public awareness campaigns for cardiac arrest and public access to defibrillation programs.  

  • Provide creative solutions and ideas that are relevant to Ontario in the delivery of campaigns on cardiac arrest and signs of stroke.  

  • Support marketing and communications department in the delivery of mass health promotion campaigns by providing input into marketing strategies and plans for Ontario. 

  • Supporting execution and ensuring alignment with targeted partnership strategies, and developing reporting for government funders as required.  

  • Work with provincial stakeholders to leverage outreach opportunities and ensure target audiences and tactics are relevant. 

Maintain a provincial framework for supporting the engagement of people with lived experience 

  • On an ongoing basis, recruit and support individuals, including people with lived experience, caregivers and others, to support our engagement efforts 

  • Onboard and train new people with lived experience and volunteers in collaboration with national team.  

  • Collaborate with external organizations for learning 

  • Engage people with lived experience in H&S mission efforts including health promotion, research, health systems change, health policy and advocacy.  

  • Lead the development of a stewardship plan for advocacy volunteers and PWLE. 

  • Identify key areas within H&S Ontario that would benefit from PWLE and advocate for inclusion. 

  • Recommend respectful, sustained opportunities to engage PWLE in public-facing advocacy efforts. 

Collaborate with the national engagement and support team, and participate in working groups to develop new PWLE initiatives, transition existing national engagement strategies and initiatives for people with lived experience.  

  • Share knowledge on external best practices  

  • Engage PWLE in planning process 

  • Brainstorm new, bold initiatives 

  • Establish strong working relationships with national engagement and support team.  

  • Provide counsel to other business units interested in having PWLE included in their work.  


Provide support to people with lived experience as they engage with H&S. 

  • Respond to public inquiries from people with lived experience and connect constituents to best available resources. 

  • Main and update list of heart disease and stroke resources available to support people with lived experience  

  • Track public inquiries to ensure proper data collection  

  • Work with national H&S team to mitigate risk and develop key messages for challenging public inquiries.  

Who we need 

Education 

  • University degree in social work, public health, community engagement or health promotion or a combination of relevant education and experience 

Experience 

  • 2-3 years’ experience in health care, health promotion or community engagement context 

  • Experience working with people with lived experience in a meaningful and respectful manner. 

  • Experience in customer services or managing public inquires in health setting. 

  • Knowledge of and application of health equity and reconciliation lens to advocate for systems change. 

  • Advocacy to create systems and community change. 

Skills  

  • Strong organizational and project management skills 

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills 

  • Strong facilitation skills 

  • Comfort and ability working in a cross-functional team 

  • Ability to work independently and pro-actively  

  • Ability to influence decision makers and lead/engage small and large groups to support current initiatives/activities
