The opportunity

The Specialist, Research is responsible for providing project development and management to the design, implementation and maintenance of an Ontario based researcher engagement framework. The incumbent will develop and lead engagement activities to promote a culture of data-informed decision making with a focus on knowledge to action. The incumbent will provide consultative advice to internal program teams with the purpose to support integration of research and researchers into all areas of H&S work.

In addition, the Specialist, Research will act as the link between the Research Engagement Committee (REC) and H&S, working collaboratively as a partner that will provide knowledge of certain trends and issues in health research and the research funding environment. The incumbent will be responsible for the evaluation and knowledge exchange of progress and results of Ontario research projects in order to bring the knowledge to action. 

Key responsibilities

Develop, implement and maintain a provincial framework for supporting researcher engagement and promoting a culture of knowledge to action

  • Prepare environmental scan of best practices that inform development and implementation of framework
  • Support knowledge transfer to Research Engagement  Council members
  • Engage Ontario researcher alumni in order to honour experience and create a pipeline of research champions
  • Work collaboratively with national research team to ensure alignment between national and provincial research programs and to seek input on creation of any new provincial research programs

Provide subject matter expertise to internal teams

  • Collaborate with internal teams to provide advice and match-making to ensure integration of research and researchers into all areas of H&S work
  • Work closely with strategic writers to ensure appropriate language, tone and content
  • Attend donor meetings as subject matter expert as required
  • Provide counsel to community fundraising teams to ensure maximum impact of researcher/research knowledge contribution
  • Maintain and share up-to-date knowledge on external funding/donor trends related to research areas
  • Provide learning opportunities to engage Ontario staff teams in H & S funded research

Support, lead, direct and engage with the Research Advisory Council

  • Work with REC Chair to identify priority areas for discussion
  • Ensure feedback/advice from REC is considered and integrated appropriately into ongoing engagement initiatives
  • Ensure REC is briefed appropriately on the current trends and scope of work within H&S for contextual purposes
  • Develop learning opportunities for REC members to enhance skill development 
  • Recruit new REC members who provide diverse representation of ON research landscape
  • Coordinate REC members for face to face and teleconference meetings

Design, develop and implement evaluation and knowledge exchange practices to bring the knowledge to action.

  • Work collaboratively with internal National Research and Data and Knowledge Management team to leverage evaluation and knowledge exchange best practices
  • Collaborate with current and past Ontario-based H&S researchers to ensure holistic and fulsome capture of data



  • Degree in science or applied science with a minimum of 2-3 years related experience
  • Course work in qualitative and quantitative research methods and evaluation 

Experience and Skills

  • 5-7 years working within research or clinical environment 
  • Experience facilitating meetings and groups
  • Experience leading committees
  • Proven experience working with researchers
  • Experience in stakeholder management
  • Experience with donor stewardship an asset
  • Ability to assemble, analyze and clearly present complex data and recommendations to professional and lay audiences
  • Demonstrated project management skills
  • Good working knowledge of health research funding landscape in Canada
  • Up to date on health sciences and clinical research trends
  • Strong writing skills, including ability to prepare concise, formal and informal reports and presentations
  • Experience facilitating meetings and groups
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Proven experience working in a complex, matrixed environment
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to influence and lead
  • Ability to travel within the province as required
